Ellen Strange

GENERATIONS of Helmshore people have heard the story of Ellen Strange and taken the old road onto the moor above Robin Hood’s Well to see the pile of stones, which is said to mark the spot where the young woman from Hawkshaw Lane was murdered. What follows explains and dates the Ellen Strange story exactly, and also shows how facts can be replaced by fiction and how a straightforward and simple tale can be transformed into a colourful but misleading legend.
